Sue Haveruk from USA takes Top FEI Honors Torres Del Paine, Chile - May 2, 2009.

In some of the most rugged terrain in the world, Sue, having never mounted the native Chilean Horse named “Cigarro” took first place FEI and Top Honours in the 85 km. Expert Category in Endurance Riding, winning over the local riders.

The ride was “Inolvidable” (Unforgettable) – I ran alongside the most majestic mountain ranges, crossed roaring rapids, maneuvered through deep bogs of mud, amongst wild Guanaco’s (llama like), endangered Nandu’s (Ostrich, Emu like), and horses. Condors soared above. It was truly amazing. I was cold, and soaked from head to toe, but after awhile it simply didn’t matter. At the vet checks, the vet told me that my horse was in outstanding condition - that he was a machine - and to go ahead and pour it on. During the last ¼ mile before the finish the locals tried to implement a strategic plan and pin me behind two front riders, and spot the favored to win behind me, but, unfortunately they took the outside edge and understanding their plan, I squeezed by and looked down at my horse, and said, “okay boy, let’s take the trophy home.” It was then that at a full gallop I was reminded of the movie “Seabiscuit” – there was complete silence except for mine and Cigarro’s breath working in unisons. We poured it on at the very end to edge over the finish line. Number 1!! Although I live in the U.S., I was proud to bring Equine Canada a First Place finish. YAY! Dam those locals for trying to push you out! So will you be doing the WEG in Kentucky next year?
